ARC of Greater New Orleans: Airline Site The ARC of Greater New Orleans is a non-profit organization serving people with intellectual disabilities and delays from birth through adulthood in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes. Arc of Greater New Orleans is committed to securing for all people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop, function and live to their fullest potential. It’s Mardi Gras time in August. Volunteers will help to separate and sort donated Mardi Gras beads. The ARC uses the funds raised from the sale of Mardi Gras beads during the Spring to support their on-going activities. ARC of Greater New Orleans: Loyola Ave. The ARC of Greater New Orleans is a non-profit organization serving people with intellectual disabilities and delays from birth through adulthood in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes. Arc of Greater New Orleans is committed to securing for all people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop, function and live to their fullest potential. Take part in the much needed beautification of the Loyola Avenue site. Volunteers will clean the grounds and plant new flowers. Some volunteers will help to wash the fleet of vans that collect donations throughout the city. This work will help with the day to day functions of this organization which assists those with intellectual disabilities. Broad Community Connections Broad Community Connections (BCC) is a nonprofit organization established after Hurricane Katrina to bring new life, commerce, and opportunity to the historic Broad Street. The Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center works within the Treme community to assist in all areas of neighborhood development. Take part in this project through clean up and beautification projects. Students will help plant trees and bushes along Broad Street and take a neighborhood tour to the ST Neighborhood center to help various beautification projects like gardening, storage clean up, and painting fences. Category Five Wetlands Watch Category Five Wetlands Watch is a show on the local PBS station- WLAE-TV that focuses on Southern Louisiana’s vanishing wetlands. The show will discuss the environmental issue as well as address the practical use of wetlands as the gulf coast’s natural hurricane protection. Students learn about wetlands restoration and grassroots advocacy. They will then write letters to the editors of their hometown newspapers and letters to their congressman. City Park City Park is one of the most important green spaces in the city and it supports a variety of conservation locations. The hundreds of acres of park land also provide enjoyment for young children playing on its playgrounds and walkers, joggers, and bicyclists winding through the Park's streets and trails. Come explore City Park's beautiful Couturie Forest and Arboretum and help spread protective and nourishing mulch along its newly constructed walking trails. Community Book Center For the past 26 years the Community Book Center (CBC) has operated under the motto “more than a book store.” The center provides literature, educates, and serves as a social hub in the effort of promoting African and African-American issues. At its most basic level, the CBC provides a space where “folks come together to discuss current events.” Volunteers that venture to the Community Book Center will help draft the CBC e-newsletter and provide the elderly owners with general help around the store. Crossroads Project/Creative Forces Since 2001 Cross Roads Project has been using creative means to address social issues in New Orleans. The organization employs art in many mediums to discuss and catalyze social change and express knowledge. The team focuses on spreading the effective power of art to artists, educators, and activists, especially through their theater group “Creative Forces.” Students will primarily focus on improving the Frederick Douglass High School campus, which serves as a base for Crossroads Project. Activities include cleaning and “sprucing up” the auditorium and various classrooms. Additionally, some volunteers will be involved with canvassing the surrounding neighborhood. First United Baptist Church First United Baptist Church began in 1995 as a merger of Central Baptist Church, a predominantly Anglo Southern Baptist Church and Faith In Action Baptist Mission, a predominantly African-American Southern Baptist Mission of Central Baptist. Several of these faith communities were more than 100 years old. Show your strength. Volunteers will help with church renovation by moving furniture and files. FW Gregory Charter School: PRIDE Opening in the fall of 2009, Pride College Prep is a pre-k through second grade school committed to providing new opportunities to learn for the children of New Orleans. They believe that by focusing on the physical and social wellness of each student, they can create the necessary conditions for academic excellence. They believe that by setting our sights on college success, our children will be encouraged, empowered, and prepared for life. They are expert educators whose approach to teaching is warm and firm. They combine overexposure to basic skills in an extended day, year-round program with the latest in enrichment strategies derived from brain research. Volunteers will help to spruce up the classrooms at the school by colorful painting and general classroom maintenance. Help to make back to school a little brighter for local youths. Green Light New Orleans Green Light New Orleans is a New Orleans environmental organization that helps low and middle income families and individuals make the switch from incandescent bulbs to energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFL). The organization strives to make a change, one house at a time. Help light up the lives of the citizens of New Orleans and reduce energy costs by greening the neighborhood. Volunteers will install CFLs in the homes of New Orleans residents so that the bulbs are put to immediate use. Hands On/Make it Right Foundation The Make it Right Foundation is an effort to rebuild the devastated 9th Ward. Started as a backlash against sluggish government initiatives to restore the area, the foundation hosts architectural competitions and then builds energy-efficient houses to make the neighborhood affordable for residents to return. Outreach volunteers will be working on five sites throughout the 9th ward. Work will consist of doing landscaping at houses belonging to the elderly. Lower Nine.org Lower Nine.org is a non-profit organization devoted to teaching home rebuilding to volunteers and residents. They also facilitate access to social services, work with youth, and experiment with models of sustainable economic development in the Lower Ninth Ward. Metropolitan Women’s Shelter The New Orleans Metropolitan Women’s Shelter provides a sanctuary for abused women in the area. The organization offers services such as a 24-hour crisis line, counseling, shelter, and legal information for victims of abuse. Volunteers will assist in fundraising for the shelter. Profits will be raised by a student-run carwash with all proceeds going to the Metropolitan Women’s Shelter. New Orleans Outreach at Langston Hughes Academy New Orleans Outreach has been working in schools across the city for the past 16 years. The organization is dedicated to examining the educational process from as many angles as possible, assisting schools by training teachers, artists and volunteers to match each campus’ unique needs. Students will assist the faculty of Langston Hughes Academy in a variety of campus beautification and organization projects. Expect to lend a hand both inside and outside by helping clean the school, tackle general physical problems, and organize the library. All volunteers will make a huge impact helping the faculty’s hard-working teachers and ensuring that Langston Hughes has a successful school year. Save Our Cemeteries Save Our Cemeteries, Inc., founded in 1974, is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the historic cemeteries of Louisiana, and to fostering a public appreciation for the architectural and cultural value of these cemeteries. Keep Louisiana cemeteries alive and kicking by spending the day on the grounds of the historic Carrolton (Green Street) Cemetery. Volunteers will be cleaning up and landscaping the cemetery in an effort to keep this wonderful site attractive to visitors and surrounding residents. The Green Project The Green Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creatively promoting and encouraging environmental sustainability in New Orleans. The project recycles building materials and paint, deconstructs homes, and salvages usable materials. Participate in the Big Clean in the Big Easy!
